YC healthcare founders forgot about the patient.

YC healthcare founders forgot about the patient.

I dug through 690 YC healthcare companies over the last 10 years and found that after 2023, the patient was ignored in exchange for healthcare operations.

Before 2023, startups focusing on the patient (consumer health, care delivery) made up 53% of all YC software healthcare companies. After 2023, that share dropped to 24%.

Instead of focusing on the patient experience, or improving the quality and delivery of care to patients directly, YC founders have hopped between hot back office automations.

When you break it down year by year, the story is even clearer:

Startups stopped focusing on the patient's experience and instead, started trying to apply AI to all the operations tasks the patient never sees.

Why? Back office automation has no patient risk. If a billing tool or prior auth automation fails, the worst thing that happens is the healthcare business loses a bit of money. However, if a patient facing AI tool fails, the actual care delivered can be seriously degraded, and the patient could lose all trust with the company itself.

However, patients went to AI anyways. According to Rock Health, 32% of adults used an AI chatbot for health, with only 5% through the provider's chatbot (and 23% through ChatGPT).

Healthcare companies need to recognize that patients are seeking out better user experiences, especially those that properly integrate AI. What's stopping you from focusing back on the patient again? And will patient facing businesses have a resurgence soon?

Patient companies are care delivery and consumer health. Software companies are the patient companies plus clinician companies (clinical software and AI) plus back office companies (front desk and patient communication, billing and revenue cycle, provider operations and staffing, insurance, benefits and prior authorization). Biotech, devices and pharma are left out.
